Larissa is a city in central Greece. It is the capital of the Thessaly periphery as well as the Larissa prefecture. The city of 150,000 (2011 estimate) is the fourth largest city in Greece. It is an important transportation hub for Greece, due to its centralized location. It is also the main agricultural centre of the country.

According to Greek mythology, Larissa was founded by Acrisius, who was accidentally killed by his son Perseus. It is where Achilles was born and where Hippocrates died.
Evidence of Paleolithic settlement has been discovered around Larissa. The region has been extremely productive for centuries, playing a role as an agricultural region since antiquity. Larissa became part of the Kingdom of Greece in 1881.

Going to Larissa
Volos Airport (VOL) serves Larissa. It is 80 km to the southwest of the city. The airport receives flights from major cities in Europe. Ryanair flies there from Hahn (Frankfurt), Bergamo (Milan), Rome and Charleroi (Brussels).
You can also reach Larissa by coach buses and trains. There are 15 buses from Athens (fare €20) every day and ten from Thessaloniki (fare €13.50).
